The short answer
We repair every common heating setup in Los Gatos, from gas furnaces and heat pumps to ductless systems, zoning controls and wall heaters. On multi-level and hillside homes, uneven heat is often a duct or zoning issue, and we test those as carefully as the equipment.
Houses in Los Gatos come in every shape: split-levels stepping down a slope, cottages that have been added onto more than once, and larger two-story homes with rooms spread far from the furnace. That variety makes heating problems here a little less predictable than in a neighborhood of identical tract homes. A warm kitchen and a cold lower-level bedroom, a heat pump that runs but never catches up, a zoning panel that stopped talking to its dampers: all of these land under heating repair. ClearSky Heating & Cooling services 95030 and 95032 from San Jose, about eleven miles to the north. We sort out whether the trouble lives in the equipment, the controls or the ducts, then fix that piece.
Multi-Level Homes and Uneven Heat
Warm air rises, and in a split-level or hillside home that simple fact can leave the lower floor several degrees cooler than the upper rooms. A single thermostat on the main level adds to the problem: once it is satisfied, the system stops, even though the bedrooms downstairs are still cold.
Fixes range from simple to involved. Sometimes rebalancing dampers and correcting a disconnected duct is enough. Other homes benefit from a properly working zoning system with separate thermostats, and some need a dedicated ductless head for a lower-level room the main ducts barely reach. We measure temperatures and airflow room by room so the recommendation is based on data, not guesswork.
Repairs by Type of System
Gas furnaces most often fail somewhere in the ignition chain, with flame sensors, igniters, pressure switches and inducer motors at the top of the list. Blower motors and their capacitors follow close behind. We also check venting and the heat exchanger whenever we work on gas equipment.
Heat pumps bring different issues: defrost controls that misfire on damp mornings, reversing valves that stick, refrigerant leaks that weaken heating output, and backup heat strips or relays that fail without anyone noticing until a cold snap. Ductless mini-splits tend to show error codes for sensor or communication faults, and their filters and coils clog faster than people expect.
Zoning systems add dampers, a control panel and multiple thermostats. A damper stuck closed or a failed zone board can make part of the house go cold while the furnace runs normally.
The Order We Troubleshoot In
Checking things in a logical sequence keeps the visit efficient and avoids replacing parts that were never the problem.
- Thermostat settings, wiring and power, including zone thermostats
- Breakers, switches and the equipment's own safety controls
- Ignition and combustion on gas units, refrigerant and defrost on heat pumps
- Blower operation, filter condition and temperature rise across the equipment
- Zone dampers and control boards where present
- Duct connections, supply airflow and return paths to the rooms that are cold
When to Shut It Off and Call Right Away
Some heating problems should not wait until a convenient time. Turn the system off and get help if a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, if you smell gas, if you see scorching or melted wiring, or if a furnace makes a loud bang each time it lights. A burning smell that persists beyond the first heating day, or water pouring from a high-efficiency furnace, also deserves prompt attention.
For a gas smell or a CO alarm, leave the house first and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Once it is safe, we can locate and repair the cause.
Looking Beyond This Repair
If the heating equipment is old and the repair bill is large, we will tell you and give you a replacement comparison. The Bay Area Air District rules never require removing equipment that still works, but gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 must meet a zero-NOx standard, so a heat pump is usually the option to compare. For many Los Gatos homes, keeping a sound furnace running a few more years with good repairs is the sensible choice, and we are happy to help you do exactly that.
